ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES ANYWHERE. PHOTOGRAPH PUMAS AT CLOSE RANGE AMONG THE BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPE OF TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A 4X4.
We have been organizing Puma photo tours since 2013, so over the years we have, through experience, developed the best itinerary for photographers, always having fantastic results. On this tour to southern Chile we are going to use comfortable 4×4 vehicles to quickly and effectively access the higher parts of an extensive private land adjacent to Torres del Paine National Park, Leona Amarga, and use the services of expert Puma trackers to photograph these “ghost cats” at close range. Our rate of success is very high and rarely there is a day we don’t photograph at least one Puma, in fact the normal is to have a few encounters a day. Other wildlife found on this tour includes the abundant Guanaco, and also possibilities for Gray and Culpeo Foxes, Humboldt’s Hog-nosed Skunk and some birds like White-tufted and Great Grebes, varied duck species, Black-necked Swan, Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Magellanic Woodpecker, Austral Pygmy Owl, etc.
During the Winter tours there is a high chance for snow, which makes the experience different and special. Winter is our favorite time of the year in Patagonia, everything is more calm, we have more freedom to explore as there are less groups and it’s excellent for Pumas because they tend to be more active throughout the day. Temperatures average from -5º C (23º F) to 6º C (43º F), with colder days possible, but there is usually much less wind and even windless days, so, as long as you are properly dressed, it doesn’t feel very cold really. Light is incredible throughout the day if the sun is out.
June 09: Your guide and host will meet you at a hotel in the morning in Punta Arenas, South Chile. We recommend you arrive the day before and stay at a hotel in the city, we will be happy to arrange this for you upon request. We use Hotel Diego de Almagro, but you are free to choose another one if you prefer. Drive to Hotel Lago Grey (05:00 hrs). We stop at the scenic town of Puerto Natales for a coffee and some photos, plus a couple other spots. Arrival at the hotel and rest of the afternoon there preparing for the next day. There are good opportunities around the hotel for birds and landscape shots. Dinner at the hotel. [Incl.: lunch, dinner]
June 10: After breakfast on this day, conditions allowing, we will do a boat tour passing near the glacier, for different landscape photos. Rest of the day exploring this beautiful region of the park, where we may find the incredible Magellanic Woodpecker among some other birds and, with a bit of luck, a rare Huemul Deer. Landscape opportunities abound too. [Incl.: brkfst, lunch, dinner]
June 11: After breakfast we will drive slowly towards El Ovejero Lodge, exploring all the photo opportunities for wildlife and landscape. We will spend the day exploring Torres del Paine National Park, arriving at the lodge at the end of the day. [Incl.: brkfst, lunch, dinner]
June 12 to 16: Five full days of Puma search. Our days start before sunrise. If our tracker, which works from a different car and communicates with us through radio, finds a puma, we go straight to it. This time of the year, because daylight hours are shorter, we stay the whole time out in the field, and carry a boxed lunch. [Incl.: brkfst, lunch, dinner]
While our main goal on this trip is always going to be Pumas, there will be a lot of other incredible photo opportunities, like the amazing landscape, the groups of Guanacos, varied birds like grebes and swans, Andean Condors, foxes, etc. [Incl.: brkfst, lunch, dinner]
June 17: After breakfast drive back to Punta Arenas, where it’s possible to catch a flight on the same day back home. Expected arrival time in Punta Arenas is after 16:00. [Incl.: brkfst, lunch]
NOT INCLUDED
A comfortable lodge located at the village of Cerro Castillo, about 40 minutes from the entrance of Estancia Laguna Amarga and the entrance to the Torres del Paine National Park, where we spend our days. The lodge itself is very comfortable, heated and with excellent food.
